The lake of Hoan Kiem lake is one of the most emblematic places of Hanoi, Vietnam. This corner hides an ancient legend that has captivated locals and travellers for centuries.

After the battle, Lê Lợi, he returned to Hanoi. While sailing in a boat by the lake, a giant turtle emerged from the water, took the sword and disappeared into the depths.

The emperor interpreted this event as a sign from god: the gods had given the sword to defend Vietnam , and, once his mission fulfilled, the claimed back. Since then, the lake was called Hoàn Kiếm, meaning ‘Lake of Sword Restored’.

In the middle of the lake is the Tower of the Turtle, a small building erected in honor of the turtle protagonist of the legend. Today, this figure is an iconic symbol of Hanoi.
