The contents of this article are based on my experience in the center of vaccination in Madrid and reported by various travellers followers of this page. To receive fully updated information on vaccinations needed for Vietnam, I recommend that you go to a Center of International Vaccination.
What vaccinations do I need for my trip to Vietnam?
The only vaccine mandatory for travel to Vietnam is that of the yellow fever, and this is only mandatory for those who have visited areas endemic for yellow fever recently (various areas in South America and Africa). These people must show their child’s immunization record to the arrival in the country.
What vaccines are recommended?
Below I list the vaccine that was recommended to me in the center of international vaccination of the community of Madrid (Spain):
- 👉 The vaccine hepatitis A.
- 👉 The of the typhoid fever.
- 👉 The vaccine japanese encephalitis.
- 👉 Vaccine tetanus and diphtheria (many I have made this for years).
- 👉 The dengue vaccine
Dengue vaccine for travel to Vietnam
In 2023, the world health assembly approved a new vaccine against dengue: Qdenga®, lab Takeda. This vaccine is also authorized by the Spanish Agency of medicines.
The dengue fever is a common disease in Vietnam and in many other parts of the world, particularly in Central America, South America, Africa, and south and southeast asia. It is a disease that is potentially fatal in severe cases, so it is highly recommended.
In Spain, the vaccine is available, although not in all international vaccination centers. It is possible that the traveler may need to buy it at a pharmacy and go to a medical center to be injected. They require two doses, with a minimum interval of 3 months between them. The vaccine in spain costs 125,56€ per dose. In my case, as well as in the other persons consulted, the side effects were very mild.
What are the most common problems when to get vaccines?
My main advice is to deal with the vaccines as soon as possible before the trip. It is possible to get all the important vaccinations months before without thereby losing its effect. Sometimes if we wait until the last moment, you can not find the vaccine or that we do not take effect in time.
You should take care soon the topic of vaccines because, in addition, to) often the vaccination centers are saturated and take time to appointment, (b) it can occur that we have to buy vaccines for our account, as they are not always available in the vaccination centers (or even in pharmacies).
What risks are there for diseases on a trip to Vietnam?
The risk of getting a disease is very low in general, and in the cities the possibilities are reduced even more.
Even so, many doctors recommend to get the vaccine, because certainly help to eliminate a risk (even if that small).
What other modes of protection are recommended?
Avoid consuming water of dubious origin
Drinking contaminated water can be the cause of the hepatitis A, typhoid and other infections. To reduce the risk of contracting these diseases, I recommend you to protect yourself by drinking only mineral water bottle (avoid to drink from streams or other water sources are not safe). In addition, you should wash your food (for example, vegetables for salad) with water previously boiled.
👉 I would recommend to bring serum for gastroenteritis in case you experience diarrhea or other stomach illness.
Protect yourself from mosquitoes.
The mosquitoes of Vietnam can transmit dengue, zika, japanese encephalitis, and malaria. Of these, after years in Vietnam, I only I have known first-hand cases of dengue fever in Vietnam, although there is a certain risk (very small) of getting all of them.

To avoid risks, I recommend to use:
👉 Mosquito repellent. Down spray mosquito on the skin every certain number of hours will help to prevent mosquito bites, and I’ve had very good experience using the spray Relec.
👉 Permethrin. permethrin is a liquid anti mosquito for clothing. This liquid you can throw in sheets, curtains, shirts, pants, underwear… and truly helps to prevent mosquito bites, in fact, that not only repels but also leaves you stiff. This substance is often cast in the nets, and, therefore, in many units of Vietnam we will see some bug dead glued to the screen. I use it regularly in my house, and I think that may be a purchase useful for anyone traveling through southeast asia.
